The old company housing project has entered a new phase. Finally, tenants have been decided, and each of them is starting to customize their rooms through DIY. At a social event with the tenants, a staff member shared their experience with DIY using diatomaceous earth, and the tenants showed interest. This led to the organization of a DIY event to plaster the walls of the basement space with diatomaceous earth.
Diatomaceous earth has moisture-absorbing properties and works well as a projector screen surface, so we decided to plaster an entire wall using trowels. Most participants were new to this work, but they gradually got the hang of it. We thoroughly covered the floor for protection and used rented plastering tools to carefully apply the mixture to the concrete surface. Through the process of working, waiting for it to dry, and then using the completed space, we realized how enjoyable it can be to update our living environment. Unlike a computer update, which is just waiting time, updating one's living space can be a fun and engaging process. We are excited about the future use of the space.
This kind of DIY event brings tenants and staff together, pushing the project further forward. We are excited to see how the new living spaces we create together with the tenants will evolve. Kume Sekkei's challenge continues, and we hope this small initiative will inspire new ideas in architecture and design.
